Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1681. King Charles II owed the Penn family lots of money so instead, he gave them the land where Pennsylvania would be.
William Penn joined the Quakers at his family's disapproval. He used this land to create a place where Quakers could live according to their beliefs. In the land, you could have free religion. The land was named Pennsylvania which means "Penn's woods"
The colony made money by farming and trading. They traded crops.
William Penn wanted the Native Americans to be treated fairly. He wrote a letter to the Native Americans in 1681, saying, "May we always live together as neighbors and friends."
Most settlers in Pennsylvania were English, German, Scots-Irish, Irish, Dutch, Swedish, Jewish, and African American.
Dutch and Swedish settlers quickly brought slaves to Pennsylvania and the other settlers tolerated it. The Quakers and German immigrants were the first to speak out against slavery. This colony was successful.

Delaware
In 1704, William Penn Granted the lower three counties of Delaware their own assembly. The counties soon broke off to form the colony of Delaware.
